Choosing a good tire for your car can make a difference in terms of performance, safety and fuel economy. Among the various models that crowd the market, between summer, 4 seasons and winter, we want to emphasize two models in particular.

The first is the Firestone Winterhawk 3, a thermal or winter model that can be said to want good quality that can be mounted on different types of car, being available in various sizes. Those who prefer 4 seasons tires can consider the Michelin Crossclimate + the right compromise between summer and winter tires that perform well in any weather.

15 Best Tires For Subaru Outback – Reviews In 2020

  1. Firestone Winterhawk 3 195/50 / R15 82T E / C / 72 Winter tire

For those looking for a winter tire that does not cost much and that still guarantees good performance, the Firestone brand, with the Winterhawk 3 model, corresponds to perfect these characteristics. It is evident for good traction during the winter months that Firestone itself considers better than previous similar tire models. This is above all thanks to the side flaps that deal with the evacuation of water and mud which can be deposited on the tire and which can be very dangerous if they are not expelled while driving.

The good-sized footprint was designed to avoid the problem of aquaplaning, an event that occurs when the rains are substantial and the asphalt is unable to drain the veil of water that forms.

The tire is offered in different sizes and meets the needs of various car models, from small cars to large SUVs.

Pro

Side fins: The side fin system has been designed to quickly eliminate water or mud that could form on the tire, making driving much less safe.

Footprint : The footprint of this winter tire is very wide. This feature guarantees less risk of incurring aquaplaning.

Measures : Firestone Winterhawk is offered in many sizes, so as to satisfy a very large fleet of cars on the market, ranging from the small car to the SUV

Versus

Wear : This tire is not immune to premature wear if used when the temperature is above 5 degrees centigrade, but this is a chronic defect of many of the winter tires on the market.

  1. Michelin Alpin A4 165/70/14 81T C / F / 70dB Winter tires

Among the various offers of Michelin branded winter tires, the Alpin A4 model stands out, which can be proud to have been named as one of the best by ADAC, the largest European automotive association that conducts independent tests on tires from all manufacturers.

Alpine A4 first of all guarantees a braking distance of less than 5% compared to other models, which translates into greater safety in the event of sudden braking on wet, frozen or snow-covered asphalt. Despite this, when you need more grip Alpine 4 proves to be 10% more lively in the starting point, always in not perfect asphalt conditions.

The tire on the side offers the “Green” marking which guarantees one of the best energy efficiency levels on the market for this model. Thanks to these tires, fuel consumption and consequent CO2 emissions are reduced. Efficiency is also found in the durability which is 35% more than tires of the previous generation.

Pro

Green : The green wording that can be seen on the side of the tire means that this tire is environmentally friendly, since it reduces fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.

Braking : The braking distance on any type of road surface is reduced by 5% compared to older generation tires.

Durability : To be a winter tire, this model suffers less from wear, guaranteeing on average 35% more kilometers to go compared to products of a generation ago.

Versus

Perfect : According to the opinions of users, it is difficult to find a better tire, which satisfies from all points of view, not least the price.

  1. Michelin Crossclimate + 205/55/16 91H B / C / 69dB Tires

Michelin’s Crossclimate + line is one of the most popular when it comes to 4-season tires. The French manufacturer has created a model that is the right compromise between summer and winter tires. This version is also approved for snow, and therefore can also be mounted where the law requires winter tires. An innovative compound, used to create this tire, allows to maximize the adherence to the ground even when the temperature is very high, or on the contrary very low. The presence of self-locking blocks allows you to brake smoothly on dry asphalt.

The tread, with a particular “V” design, allows you to move without problems especially when dealing with frozen or snowy asphalt. Independent tests confirm the excellent braking performance of this model, which is on a par with the summer Crossclimate model, and therefore the best of the Michelin brand when it comes to stopping the car on dry surfaces.

Pro

Braking : This tire proves to be one of the best “All Seasons” when it comes to braking on any road surface, from dry to ice-covered.

Design : The tread features a “V” design that is designed to have the right grip when tackling icy or snowy roads.

Special compound : In low or high temperatures, nothing changes: the special compound used for this tire ensures maximum adherence to the ground at all times.

Versus

Consumption : It is not surprising that there will be slightly higher consumptions when using this tire, but this is a problem common to the 4 seasons models.

  1. Firestone Multiseason 165/70 / R14 81T E / C / 71 Tires

Very attractive price for this 4 season tire proposed by Firestone that allows you to drive in total safety facing any weather conditions. It is approved for winter use, therefore it corresponds to the specifications that allow you not to run into heavy fines in the areas where thermal tires are mandatory at a certain time of the year.

Like other Firestone tires, the Multiseason model is also offered in different sizes, to meet the needs of most motorists who aim to have only one set of tires for the whole year.

Among its best features, given also the price, it is the reference value for wet grip, which gets the class “B”, when the best is the class “A”. The same class also for fuel consumption (B), which proves to be an excellent result as it allows not to have much impact on fuel costs by using these 4 seasons tires.

Pro

Quality / price : One of the 4 seasons tires with the best quality / price ratio, as evidenced by the drivers who bought it for their car.

Winter : Firestone Multiseason complies with winter tire regulations, so they can be mounted without the risk of fines if you were to be stopped in the period and in the areas where they are mandatory.

Class B : This tire can boast class “B” both as regards fuel consumption and for grip on wet surfaces.

Versus

Noise : Some users note that the rolling noise on the asphalt is slightly noticeable especially when it is dry. However nothing particularly annoying.

  1. Hankook I Cept Rs2 (W452) 185/65 / R15 88T E / C / 71 Winter tire

This model of winter tire with the M + S logo is designed for compact and medium-sized cars, which fall into the category of small cars or city cars.

This tire proves to be excellent even when creating the dangerous sludge grip on the road due to the melting of the snow, which makes it less compact and therefore more easily inclined to stick to the tire, with a consequent decrease in grip. It offers a steel belt of very large size: this feature allows a better tread rigidity which is very useful when you have to deal with asphalt covered with snow or ice.

This steel belt is covered by a second belt which is further reinforced and which is denoted by the lack of joints. The I Cept Rs2 tire is offered in different sizes and its price is not particularly high compared to that of models with the same characteristics but from better known manufacturers.

Pro

Steel belt : Makes the tread particularly stiff and therefore ideal for tackling roads with a lot of snow or ice.

Anti-mud : The special tread design allows water and especially mud not to stick to the tire, but rather runs away leaving the surface always clean.

Price : The quality of the Hankook I Cept Rs2 tire is combined with a cost that is slightly lower than that of the models of other manufacturers with the same technical characteristics.

Versus

Nothing to report : motorists who have relied on this winter tire do not highlight particular problems that may discourage their purchase.

  1. Hankook Ventus Prime 3 K125 205/55 / R16 91H C / A / 71

This summer tire puts forward technology and design on the plate, all at the service of the driver’s safety. The wide steel belt, for example, allows better maneuverability whether you are tackling dry asphalt or traveling on a particularly wet road. The shoulder of Hankook tires has been designed to offer better durability, while the special silicon compound, in addition to offering excellent performance on dry and wet surfaces, allows for lower rolling resistance, all to the benefit of fuel consumption and related CO2 emissions.

The maneuvers in total safety are guaranteed by the double stiffness provided on the ribs, combined with a depth and position of the grooves designed for maximum maneuverability in any situation.

Finally stands out the contact area on the asphalt which for this top-of-the-range tire has the particularity of expanding instantly during braking thanks to the shape of the tread channel.

Pro

Contact area : The tread channel is rounded and allows the contact area on the asphalt to expand automatically whenever you brake, even suddenly.

Maneuverability : Thanks to the presence of a reinforced steel belt, it allows you to perform maneuvers in total tranquility regardless of the type of asphalt you find, whether wet or dry.

Rolling : The compound used for this summer tire has been designed by Hancock to offer excellent wet and dry performance but decrease rolling resistance.

Versus

Different price : This tire is sold at different costs depending on the dealer. To find out where to buy the cheapest it is always better to compare the prices by following the links below.

  1. Michelin Energy Saver + 195/65/15 91H A / C / 70dB Tires

When you don’t want to make a mistake in choosing a tire, you must turn to the models offered by the most famous brands. Michelin tires, for good reason, are among the best on the market. The Energy Saver + model does not escape this feature, a model that makes fuel economy its workhorse.

In fact, those who purchase this tire can count on an energy efficiency class equal to the letter C, which translates into savings of 60 liters per year compared to the previous model. The life of the tire is also greater: Michelin assigns 6,301 km more to this tire than the first generation Energy Saver.

These savings are available to many motorists, given that the tire is offered in different sizes that cover a little bit of all the car models on the market. Another very important feature is the wet grip class which corresponds to the letter “A”, in practice the best you can hope to have for a summer tire.

Pro

Wet grip: Among the various characteristics of this premium tire, the “A” class stands out as regards the classification of grip on wet asphalt.

Reduced consumption : The nomer “Energy Saver” has been given this tire by Michelin because compared to previous models it saves 60 liters of fuel per year.

Durability : The wear and tear of the tire is not least in terms of high performance, which in this case is considerably reduced since according to Michelin more than 6 thousand kilometers more than the old model can be done.

Versus

Cost : The Michelin Energy Saver + tire is a top model and therefore the price is affected. In fact, compared to the average of summer tires it has a slightly higher cost.

  1. Uniroyal RainSport 3 205/55 / R16 91V C / A / 71 Estivos tire

For the summer or if you live in areas where snow is a more unique than rare event, you must fit summer tires on your car.

Like the Uniroyal RainSport 3 model which, as we understand from the name, has been designed to be mounted on sports cars and therefore needs superior performance, including SUVs and large-displacement cars. The first feature that catches the eye of this summer tire is that it is particularly safe even in the event of rain and therefore clearly as wet as the asphalt.

Safety in the event of sudden showers is guaranteed by special grooves on the external surface which are spaced so as to drain the water as soon as it comes into contact with the rubber. The presence of a “circle saver” border is much appreciated, which in practice prevents this from being scratched if you get too close to the sidewalks when parking.

Pro

Sportsman : The best destination for this tire are sports cars, SUVs and large-displacement cars that need high-level performance.

Consumption : The Uniroyal tire corresponds to the energy efficiency class “A”, therefore no more liters of fuel will be consumed due to rolling resistance.

Wet : This tire offers its best when it comes to facing very wet asphalt, thanks to a slightly softer compound that allows the tire to have greater grip on the asphalt.

Versus

Durability : The other side of the coin of having a soft compound makes itself felt on the durability of the tire as evidenced by some users who have had the opportunity to try it.

  1. Nexen N blue HD Plus 205/55 / R16 91V C / B / 68 Estivos tire

Little expense but a lot of yield for this model of Nexen tires, a company less known perhaps, but which offers quality products at very affordable prices. An example is the Nexen N blue HD Plus summer model, proposed in size 205/55 / R16 91V which offers a design with lateral grooves to ensure better driving stability in the wet. When cornering even at high speeds you can count on the very rigid shoulder block, which also allows greater handling of the vehicle where these summer tires are mounted.

It can be mounted on all cars from the middle class upwards. The eco-friendly construction is highly appreciated, which through the use of cutting-edge technologies guarantees maximum quality in performance.

Among these, the hydrophilic Filler and the microstructure with controlled special polymers are the two characteristic elements of the compound used, which allows excellent road holding on both dry and wet surfaces.

Pro

Compound : The strengths of the compound are hydrophilic filler and the microstructure with special controlled polymers, to benefit the performance on dry and wet asphalt.

Notches : The presence of three continuous notches placed in the central part of the tire allows for maximum stability even on long straightaways at high speed.

OCCS technology : Thanks to this particular technology, the tire does not deform, even if it is subjected to external stresses, thus ensuring always optimal road holding.

Versus

No flaw : It is difficult to find a “counter” to a tire sold at an attractive price and offering performance that all motorists consider to be of a high standard.

  1. Continental ContiPremiumContact 5 205/55 / R16 91V C / A / 71

Among the Continental tires, a model that deserves attention if you need a summer tire is the ContiPremiumContact 5. The company offers it in 26 versions for rims ranging from 14 to 17 inches in size. From this it is easy to guess that they are tires suitable for small-displacement cars but which do not disfigure even in those of a higher category. In fact, they are approved for cars that reach speeds of up to 270 km / h.

The excellent grip, which is especially noticeable when cornering, is due to the presence of very large blocks on the tire shoulder.

The aquaplaning phenomenon is a problem that should not always occur thanks to the blocks that allow water to leave the tire in an instant. Interesting are the so-called “silencing notches” which are in practice tiny rubber sections positioned above the blocks and which take care not to disperse the noise outside.

Pro

Braking distance: Compared to previous ContiPremiumContact models, version 5 guarantees a braking distance in the wet of less than 15%.

More kilometers : The latest Continental tire model suffers less wear than the old models: with this you travel about 12% more kilometers.

Less noise : Continental’s idea of inserting “silencing notches” is a great pleasure to decrease the noise of the tire even more when traveling.

Versus

Price : In order to enjoy the performance of this tire, you need to be ready to shell out a few euros more than the average.

  1. Pirelli Winter 210 SnowControl Series III 205/55 / R16 91H E / B / 72

From one of the most famous brands for the production of tires comes a thermal model (or winter if you like) with a little high price. In the various sizes in which it is proposed, it is suitable for small cars, small family cars and compact sedans. Those who mount this tire can count on extreme stability, excellent traction but above all on reduced stopping distances on all types of road, especially when ice and snow are the masters.

Among its characteristics, the rounded profile of the tread deserves attention which, thanks to a design with oblique notches and two longitudinal grooves, allows you to quickly expel the water towards the outside of the tire.

This, in practice, avoids running into the dangerous aquaplaning effect. Pirelli tires are made with Green Performance technology which is evident above all in the lower fuel consumption and relative lowering of carbon dioxide emissions. Running stability on dry asphalt is guaranteed by a silica-based compound and the new heel area.

Pro

Braking : One of its best features concerns the braking distance, which is very small compared to medium-low end tires.

Wet management : A rounded tread profile specially designed with oblique cuts and groove is effective in evacuating water and reducing the risk of aquaplaning.

Compound : Based on new generation silicon, it allows perfect stability even when you press a little on the accelerator.

Versus

Price : It is certainly not a tire for those who want to save money, but its value is worth every extra euro you spend, especially if you think about your safety in the car.

  1. Bridgestone Blizzak LM 001 225/45 / R17 94V E / B / 72

Among the premium brands, Bridgestone tires are among the most important and are ideal for those who have cars of a certain value and drive many kilometers every year. In particular, in the winter tire segment, the Bridgestone Blizzak LM001 model stands out, characterized by an innovative tread design.

This sees the presence of a large number of dowels and notches, positioned so as to allow maximum adherence in all weather conditions. Another example of technology applied to tires are 3D grooves, which are very useful when the road surface is snowy or wet.

In addition, this technology allows to extend the life of the tire by 15%, thanks to the grooves that even after many kilometers traveled allow you to maintain the level of rigidity to the tread optimally. Lastly, Blizzak LM001 is equipped with large inclined grooves that take care of compacting the snow, significantly improving the friction on the ground for extremely reduced braking distances.

Pro

3D grooves : This new technology applied to the tread design allows for maximum traction and stability in any asphalt condition you have to compare.

Wear : Those who buy Bridgestone tires know that the durability will be much higher than other models. In this case, the company guarantees a 15% longer life when compared with other premium tires.

Safety : Blizzak LM001 series tires have been considered by independent tests to be among the safest on the market at the moment.

Versus

Not for everyone : Quality, as often happens, is paid for and also salty. The price of this tire is not for everyone and its purchase is ideal for those who own luxury cars.

  1. Pirelli Cinturato P7 Runflat 205/50 / R17 89V E / B / 71 Estivos tire

Specific for medium-high displacement cars, belonging to the runflat tires category, the Pirelli Cinturato P7 is also approved to support cars that reach the beauty of 270 Km / h. The slightly expensive tire has the property of suffering much less from irregular wear, a problem that afflicts many low-quality tires.

The main feature of this tire, however, is the presence of runflat technology, which is the main reason for those who will buy this model.

The tire, to fall into the runflat category, has internal reinforcements that are able to support the car even when the tire punctures and consequently loses pressure. You can therefore travel for about eighty km at the maximum speed of 80 km / h, then you still need to change the tire. Note the asymmetrical tread with circumferential channels that are designed to offer greater protection from aquaplaning and in general better grip in the wet.

Pro

Runflat : This innovative technology allows you to continue the journey for about 80 kilometers without exceeding 80 km / h in the event of a puncture or a small lateral cut.

Asymmetric tread : Pirelli has studied this particular tread design to make the aquaplaning effect less likely and improve performance on wet asphalt.

Uneven wear : One of its best features concerns the lesser chance of finding an irregularly worn tread, a very common problem among low value tires.

Versus

Consumption : The tire corresponds to the consumption reference class “E”, therefore not exactly one of the best if you want to keep fuel costs down.

  1. Tomket 129358-205 / 55 / R16 91V C / B / 69dB Summer tires

For cars with 205 55 R16 tires, a convenient but good value model is the one offered by Tomket in the 129358 version. This summer tire has a data that is very difficult to find even on tires of much more famous manufacturers. We are talking about the noise index which stands at only 69 db, when on average the other tires were noisy around 71/72 decibels.

Another important fact concerns the wet grip class, which is detected with the letter “B”, which is almost the maximum considering that the letter “A” is the best class. The price of this tire suitable for sports cars is among the best, considering also the general quality, as users who have purchased it point out. There are also four very wide grooves which combined with the asymmetrical tread improve the grip on the wet and reduce the risk of aquaplaning.

Pro

Decibel : This tire has a noise index of only 69 decibels, a much lower figure than the average between 71 and 72 decibels.

B in the wet : As regards performance in the event of wet asphalt, the Tomket tire has an adhesion index equal to the letter “B”, almost the maximum.

Quality / price : A 205 55 r16 sports tire with this general quality can hardly be found at this price.

Versus

Compound : To be a summer tire, some users find that the compound is a little too soft and this could affect the durability of the tire.

  1. Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance Compact 205/55 R16 91V

In our overview of the best 2020 tires, a proposal by Goodyear could not be missing, one of the most famous and recognized brands for the quality of its products. The summer model EfficientGrip Performance Compact with size 205/55 R16 91V is suitable for sports cars, it can boast of the class “A” of grip on wet surfaces, the best you can hope for.

So even in extreme conditions of wet asphalt, traction will always be regular and safe driving. This is thanks to the very wide sipes that break the water surface effectively, thus being able to reach the dry asphalt in the shortest possible time. The same applies to dry asphalt: users are satisfied with the road holding even when pushing on the accelerator.

And all this is offered at a price that is not very high compared to the average, so they are a good choice for those who have to mount summer tires of the size described above.

Pro

Sipes : The presence of ultra wide sipes allows them to break the film of water that forms on the asphalt and produce friction on the dry road surface.

FuelSaving : This technology used to create the compound was designed to reduce rolling resistance by a good 18%. This is reflected in lower fuel consumption.

Dry : If its best capacity concerns grip on wet surfaces, it is not least in dry asphalt conditions, given that the braking distance is reduced by 3% compared to previous models.

Versus

Wet grip class : Please note that there is also a version of this tire with grip class “B”. Better always check the label before purchase.

Guide to buy a tire

Car tires are divided into summer, winter and 4 seasons. The choice must be weighted according to the area in which you live and the possibility of making trips to regions where it is necessary to have winter tires but usually summer tires. The latter are indicated where there is no obligation for winter tires or, if there is, snow is quite rare and a good pair of chains on board can still allow you to move without incurring penalties.

Safety when the temperature drops

Winter tires, also known as thermal tires, are indispensable in areas where snow and ice are events that are not long in winter. Even if you live in the plains of northern Italy and not necessarily in the mountainous areas, the installation of a winter tire in the period from mid-November to mid-April is highly recommended, also for, as mentioned, not having to pay fines in the event of checks by the police in the period indicated above.

Untangle between the acronyms

Among the various abbreviations and writings on the winter tire it is necessary to check that there is the M + S marking (from English Mud and Snow, translated into mud and snow). Some manufacturers highlight this abbreviation in different ways such as M&S, MS, M / S, but the meaning is the same and you can be sure that you are buying a train of tires approved to be fitted in the coldest time of the year.

It is good to remember that the winter tire is fully used when the outside temperature drops below 7 ° centigrade, regardless of the asphalt conditions, or if it is snowy, dry or frozen. Above this temperature, a normal “summer” tire has the same performance as the winter one, indeed very often better especially in the case of wet asphalt. For this reason, if you live in areas where the temperature hardly drops below 7 ° and snow is a more unique than rare event, snow chains are the best solution (and also the cheapest) not to be in contravention if the law imposes winter tires or, precisely, chains on board.

Summer tires are the most used ones and the market offers all kinds and qualities. They range from the most famous brands, to lesser-known manufacturers who do not offer low-quality tires. This buying guide is intended to help you choose which tire to buy based on your needs, including economic ones. In fact, it is not certain that the best tire of 2020 is that of the best known brand. User reviews are always a good way to understand if a product is worth the purchase or not, and even tires don’t escape this logic.

All year long

A choice that unites both needs is to opt for 4-season tires, also known on the market as “All Season”. These tires have the peculiarity of being reliable on any type of road surface. The first advantage of fitting 4-season tires is to use only one train of tires for the whole year, regardless of the climatic conditions that can be faced during this period of time, so it is not necessary, even where the law requires it, install the thermal tires to be able to move, as the 4 seasons approved models are equivalent to the mandatory winter ones.

In case of abundant snow, however, good old chains are still essential to be able to move safely. As for safety, as mentioned, if we consider the braking distance, based on the asphalt condition, the All Seasons are positioned in the middle between summer and winter. For example, on snow, the braking distance required for a car with winter tires will be less compared to those who ride in the summer and those who use the 4 seasons. But a vehicle with 4-season tires needs less stopping distance than in summer if there is snow on the asphalt

The choice of tire must be made according to the measurements shown in the registration document. Normally the car manufacturer, to have the homologation to circulate, allows to install two tire sizes, but fitting different ones from what is written on the registration document can lead, in case of control by the police, to the block automatic vehicle and a resulting very, very high fine.

Frequent questions

How many km do the tires last?

To say exactly how long the tires last is very difficult. Much depends on what kind of roads you usually travel on or other factors that can affect the wear that some drivers face and others do not. It can be assumed that approximately every 40 thousand kilometers (or even less) must be replaced but, as mentioned, this duration depends on many factors. To find out if the time has come, a trusted tire dealer can help.

How does the tire pressure sensor work?

The TPMS sensor, which stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System, has been mandatory since November 1, 2014 and allows you to keep the pressure of each individual tire under control. These sensors are inserted either at the valve level or inside the tread, and this choice is made by the tire manufacturer.

Once the tire is installed, the control unit in the car constantly monitors the pressure, and if it drops below (or above) a recommended value will notify the driver with an “alert” that will be clearly visible in the instrumentation. driving.

How does the tire repair kit work?

The tire repair kit has in fact replaced, in most cars, the old spare wheel and the crick, making repair of the punctured wheel much easier. This much less cumbersome device has enabled car manufacturers to offer more space in the trunk. How the tire repair kit works is very simple, since it includes a small compressor and a gas cylinder. To power the compressor it is necessary to connect it to the 12V cigarette lighter socket present in all cars.

The can, previously connected to the tire valve, releases a special foam inside the rubber which “fills” the hole, effectively repairing it and bringing the tire pressure back to an ideal level to continue driving. It is clear that this solution is valid to be able to get to a tire repairer who proceeds with the perfection repair of the puncture. In case of cuts on the side of the tire there is nothing else to do but call the roadside assistance.

Does ABS also work when tires are worn out?

There are no problems: the ABS works even when the tires are worn, so even in this case the four wheels do not lock in the event of a sudden braking.

What does m + s tires mean?

With the initials M + S, (from the English Mud and Snow, mud and snow) visible on the side of the tires, we are dealing with a tire that falls into the 4 seasons category. If in addition to this abbreviation there is the symbol of a snowflake enclosed within a stylized mountain then they are winter or thermal tires. In both cases they can be mounted when there is an obligation of chains on board or snow tires.

When to replace tires?

The time to replace the tires is defined by the depth of the tread groove. European legislation has determined that this measurement should not exceed 1.6mm. Below or like it, the time has come to change tires.

This operation is very important for your own safety, but it can also avoid fines if you are stopped for a check by law enforcement. If you like “do it yourself” and you want to measure the tread, you can create a 1.6 mm dowel and insert it in the tread.

If the rubber is beyond the block there are no problems, if the block comes out of the groove the tire is inexorably worn. All four tires are not necessarily worn out in the same way. Unfortunately, however, due to car set-up problems, even just one of the two worn front or rear ones implies the replacement of both (but not all four if the other two do not reach the indicated limit).

Curiosity about tires

To choose the right tire for your car, first you need to check the information in the registration document. If you were making an online purchase, and the booklet was not at hand, just connect to the site of the manufacturer of your car, select the model and technical specifications. In a flash you can have the exact measurements of the tire to be installed.

Find out which is the right tire

The tide of acronyms that are read could be frightening. However, these uniquely define which tire to mount. To know how to read a tire, you can follow this example. If an abbreviation of the type 205/65 / R15 91H is read on the sidewall, the “translation” is this: 205 indicates the width of the tire to be mounted, 65 is the percentage between the side heights and the section width of the tire.

The letter R indicates the type of tire, in this case “radial”, which is then the definition of the structure of the carcass. You will hardly find another letter, because nowadays most of the tires used on cars are radial. 91 is the maximum load index that the tire can support at the indicated speed, which is expressed with another letter that we will see later.

This must cover the total vehicle kilograms, but 91 does not mean 91 kilograms. In fact, there is a specific table where each number corresponds to a load: in this case the number 91 is equivalent to a maximum supported load of 615 kg per tire. Finally, the letter H highlights the maximum speed index. Again the letter refers to a specific table, and in our case the letter H corresponds to 210 km / h.

Other acronyms to decipher

It will not be impossible to find other numbers on the sidewall of the tire, usually four consecutive digits, such as 0517. This number in practice when the tire was produced, or the fourth week (05) of 2017 (17). It is important to check this because a tire that has been produced not recently may not be as reliable as a newer one.

Basically it is better not to buy tires that are two years old. Finally, if the tire you intend to purchase is of the winter type, the initials M + S (or MS, M / S) must be compulsorily accompanied by the symbol of a snowflake enclosed within a stylized mountain. The tires that do not have this symbol are All Seasons, while summer tires have no symbol or symbol

The European Union trademark

Another important assessment to make when buying a new tire is offered by the EU mandatory label which must be present on the tires at the time of purchase. This very colorful label shows three data which are very important in terms of tire performance. The label consists of three designs, two letter scales and a numerical data followed by the abbreviation db. The first drawing showing a tire topped by a petrol station indicates the fuel consumption reference class, which goes from A (the best) to G (the worst). A black arrow with the letter inside highlights this class.

The same is proposed with regard to wet grip, and is noted for a tire flanked by a cloud pouring down rain. Again, the rule applies that the letter A indicates the best grip and the letter G the worst. Finally, the tire with a speaker in the center indicates the external rolling noise, and the number followed by the abbreviation db (decibel) allows you to understand how much noise you will hear if you keep the car windows down.

Rank #1: Firestone Winterhawk 3 195/50 / R15 82T E / C / 72 Winter tire

Side fins:

The side fin system has been designed to quickly eliminate water or mud that could form on the tire, making driving much less safe.

Footprint :

The footprint of this winter tire is very wide. This feature guarantees less risk of incurring aquaplaning.

Measures :

Firestone Winterhawk is offered in many sizes, so as to satisfy a very large fleet of cars on the market, ranging from the small car to the SUV

Wear :

This tire is not immune to premature wear if used when the temperature is above 5 degrees centigrade, but this is a chronic defect of many of the winter tires on the market.

Rank #2: Michelin Alpin A4 165/70/14 81T C / F / 70dB Winter tires

Green :

The green wording that can be seen on the side of the tire means that this tire is environmentally friendly, since it reduces fuel consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.

Braking :

The braking distance on any type of road surface is reduced by 5% compared to older generation tires.

Durability :

To be a winter tire, this model suffers less from wear, guaranteeing on average 35% more kilometers to go compared to products of a generation ago.

Perfect :

According to the opinions of users, it is difficult to find a better tire, which satisfies from all points of view, not least the price.
